My favourite bit: 'Never, literally never in recent years, have I met anyone who gave me the impression of believing in the next world as firmly as he believed in the existence of, for instance, Australia.' Aha! Me, neither.

As much as I appreciate Orwell's writing and secular rages against totalitarianism, I disagree with him here. It seems the implication is that he never spent any time with devout Christians. Many don't joke about hell, contrary to his unqualified conclusion. And for those Christians who do joke about it, it's because they're already assured eternal salvation.

An Orwell-C.S. Lewis debate would have been intriguing. Lewis' writing provided us hope that pointed to righteousness authored by God. Orwell added new words to our lexicon meant to open our eyes about the treachery of other men. What I interpret between Orwell's lines is that for every man wanting peace and equality there are two who covet power, control and wealth.

Man has a great track record. Just read Orwell...
